The Melolonthinae, commonly known as chafer beetles, cucards in French-speaking Switzerland or barbeau in Quebec, are a subfamily of nocturnal beetleinsects [ref. needed], in the Scarabaeidae family (formerly Melolonthidae family). The common name hanneton is given in French to several species and genera of the subfamily Melolonthinae.

The adults are phyllophagous (leaf eaters) and some species have long been known to have cyclical outbreaks during which they can completely defoliate certain trees, or even a forest stand. The larvae, known as white grubs or mans , are radicivores. Several species - when they swarm - are harmful to agriculture. In the past, they were also considered harmful to forestry.()
