Basket weed remover
The basket weeder is a tool for mechanical weeding on row crops. It is used to combat small weeds in the inter-row at the white thread or cotyledon stages.
Operation
The weeder consists of round metal baskets that rotate while rolling on the ground. These baskets:
- scrape the soil surface, working at about 2 to 3 cm depth
- uproot small weeds
- only slightly displace the soil.
After passing this tool, the weeds are thus pulled out of the soil and dry in the sun.
The baskets can be mounted on a tractor-drawn, pushed, or mounted tool.
Period of use
The basket weeder is effective on:
- young weeds
- a dry surface soil.
Generally, the tool is used before crop emergence or at early emergence.
Suitable crops
This tool is suitable for market gardening and open field vegetable row crops.
Settings
To work properly, it is necessary to adjust:
- the pressure of the baskets on the soil
- the forward speed
- and the spacing between the baskets, so that it fits the inter-row.
Advantages
- The tool can be used at relatively high speeds because it acts superficially and has little impact on the crop.
- Does not disturb the soil.
- Reduces the weed seed bank.
Limitations
- Ineffective on large weeds.
- Requires good timing.
- Does not work on the row.
- Must be combined with other tools.
