Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) is a species of herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae (Compositae) family, the only species of the genus Tussilago still accepted.
It is a perennial plant with rhizomes. It is typical of unstable soils rich in bases : wasteland and disturbed ground. It is one of the most widely used pectoral plants in phytotherapy.
In the past, it was called Filius ante patrem, the "son before the father", because it has the particularity of flowering well before leafing out.()
