Subscribe to Crop Insurance
Subscribing to crop insurance can be considered to reduce the impact of climatic hazards on crops.
Generally, it is possible to choose between two options:
- Coverage for hail risk only
- Coverage for hail risk and other climatic risks (frost, flood, storm, drought, snow weight, frostbite...)
This option is subsidized by the CAP up to 65% (for the guarantees of the "basic contract"). The winegrower determines their yield and price (with a price ceiling set by an annual scale for the basic contract), to establish a guaranteed capital by appellation. Compensation is paid on this capital after applying the deductible and the intervention threshold and according to the valuation of the grape. As an indication, the cost of this insurance before subsidy generally ranges between €50 and €400/ha depending on the appellations and the guaranteed capital. Note that the yield deficit can lead to a commercial handicap in the following years, which is generally not covered by the insurance.

Climate reserve mechanism
This mechanism, funded during good years, allows to compensate for losses in deficit years, notably related to weather events (frost, hail, drought, etc.). The "qualitative reserve" procedure, long initiated in Champagne, is now developing in many other regions with the Individual Complementary Volume (VCI) mechanism. It is a volume of wine produced beyond the annual yield of the appellation and put in reserve, which can be used later, especially following climatic hazards.
Conclusion
Alongside these indirect measures, the implementation of protection devices can be considered for regions with a high frequency of risk.
