Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a species of xerophytic plant, native to South America, more specifically Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina and southern Brazil. It is best known for its edible fruit, which is actually a compound fruit. The word pineapple comes from the Tupi-Guarani naná naná, meaning "perfume of perfumes". The term pineapple is also an ambiguous vernacular name that can refer to several other species of Bromeliaceae, not or only slightly edible, such as the species Glomeropitcairnia penduliflora referred to as "wild pineapple", "wood pineapple" and "zannanna mawon", or several species of the botanical genus Ananas, such as Ananas bracteatus, referred to as "wild pineapple" and "brown pineapple".()
