The potato moth (Phthorimaea operculella) is a species ofinsect in the order Lepidoptera (butterflies) and the family Gelechiidae, native to America. It is a small butterfly whose caterpillar is mainly a pest of potato tubers, particularly during the storage period.


This insect is widespread in all warm tropical and subtropical regions of the world, and particularly around the Mediterranean basin.()
