Heterodera schachtii (beetnematode, beet cyst nematode) is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the family Heteroderidae, which is cosmopolitan in distribution.


This species parasitises the roots of plants belonging to many species, particularly in the Chenopodiaceae and Brassicaceae families, including some economically important crops such as beetroot. It is a major pest of sugar beet crops in Europe and Russia.


Heterodera schachtii belongs to a complex of species that are morphologically very difficult to distinguish from one another, a group that also includes the following species : Heterodera betae, Heterodera ciceri, Heterodera daverti, Heterodera galeopsidis, Heterodera glycines, Heterodera lespedezae, Heterodera medicaginis, Heterodera rosii and Heterodera trifoli.()
