Heterodera avenae, theoat nematode, cereal root nematode, cereal cyst nematode, is a species of roundworm belonging to the Heteroderidae family.


This species parasitises the roots of plants in the Poaceae family (grasses), causing damage to cereal crops, mainly wheat andbarley.


It belongs to the cereal cyst nematode complex, a complex of closely related species that are difficult to differentiate, including Heterodera latipons ( Mediterranean basin), Heterodera hordecalis (Germany, Scandinavia, United Kingdom), Heterodera zeae (India, Pakistan) and Heterodera filipjevi (Russia, Turkey), among the most economically important.
