FertiBioSol Project - Compost by MSV Normandy

From Triple Performance

As part of a previous call for projects (PEI, 2017 call for projects), three partner organizations (BioPousses, Sileban, and CFPPA Coutances) organized around the SOCLE Innovation AB project to experiment with and disseminate innovative techniques adapted to market gardening and vegetable farming operations in Normandy. The objective was to provide technical and economic benchmarks on techniques for soil fertility management of biological soils and to address the hardship mainly linked to manual weeding tasks in market gardening. The FertiBioSol project continues SOCLE Innovation AB on the theme of managing biological soil fertility by proposing a broader scale of work at the farm level and adopting a prophylactic approach to pest management.

Compost production

Composting is an aerobic process that transforms organic waste into a fertilizing, stable material rich in humus. Organic waste is often a mixture of livestock effluents and straw, green waste, sewage sludge, bio-waste, ...

Steps of green waste shredding :

  • Reception, quality control and sorting
  • Shredding
  • Fermentation and maturation
  • Screening and storage

Compost characteristics

Humus formation for 10 t dry compost :

DM compost = 10 t X K1 = 50 % = Humus = 5 t

Analyses of horse manure compost from the ferme des semis sauvages :

Samples Compost
Agronomic value characterization DM % raw 62.6
OM % dry 39.6
pH water 9.4
General composition C / N total 12.6
Total N g/kg dry 15.7
Major elements Phosphorus g/kg dry 6.9
Potassium g/kg dry 12.8
Magnesium g/kg dry 4.8
Calcium g/kg dry 50.9
Isohumic coefficient K1 (%) 50 - 60

Supply in market gardening

Use

Granulometry

There are different compost granulometries. Depending on its use and spreading method, the granulometry is adapted accordingly.

Logistics

Simple spreading or with incorporation :
