Hares (Lepus) are a genus of small mammals in the Leporidae family. They are herbivorous wild animals, similar to rabbits. There are around thirty species of hare in the world, differing in size, colour and lifestyle. Hares are relatively solitary animals, sometimes living in pairs.

Hares are slender and light and have long, very muscular hind legs that enable them to propel themselves in very rapid leaps when necessary. The snowshoe hare can travel at an average speed of 60km/h, with a top speed of 80km/h, and can also leap up to 2 metres vertically.
