Erosion TTool/Maintenance and creation of drainage ditches
Ditches are man-made structures whose role is to drain water. They allow the concentration of water and moisture present on the plot and channel them.
Description
Benefits
- Allows the evacuation of gravitational water and thus drainage.
- Allows faster drying out.
- Reduction of degradation or yield loss.
There are two types of ditches:
- Ditches at the bottom of the plot or with a gentle slope.
- Ditches along the slope, within the plot.
Disadvantages
- May harm biodiversity: this can be limited by planting grass strips and creating a biological corridor (hedges, embankments, ponds).
- May lead to an amplification of runoff processes and erosion depending on the organization of the ditch network.
Advice[1]
- It is preferable to seed the ditches with grass.
- They should be between 40 and 70 cm deep and should be maintained twice a year to remove blockages and branches that may limit flow.
- The use of phytopharmaceutical products and fertilization in these ditches should be avoided.
