Characterization of the technique

Description of the technique:

Vine training is a cultural control method. This technique does not directly belong to the field of plant protection but can help limit the appearance and development of pests and/or provide the crop with means to defend itself.

In viticultural production, managing the architectural training of vines, in interaction with fruit load management and competition, strongly impacts vine vigor. It also influences the development of pests by modifying the microclimate (aeration, wetness duration, light exposure) within the foliage and by the growth dynamics of organs modulating periods of susceptibility or attractiveness depending on the development stage. Vine training also modifies the spatial distribution of organs, which can influence the development of certain pests (ash aphid…) or the spread of diseases.

Choices of training system (planting density, vine pruning…) in relation to the selection of the "variety x rootstock" pair are decisive for vineyard management. These choices are key elements for the technical and economic success of the vineyard, as they strongly influence the speed of entry into production, the regularity of agronomic performance, grape quality, and work times.
