Cabbage aphid

From Triple Performance
Brevicoryne brassicae
Ravageur

The cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) is a species of hemipteraninsect in the Aphididae family(aphids), native to Europe. It is a pest of plants in the Brassicaceae family.

According to a study published in mid-2007, it can use and mimic the chemical defence system of its host plant. The larva of this aphid absorbs and stores in its haemolymph certain protein metabolites (glucosinolates), which protect the cabbage from its predators, and - as does the cabbage - the aphid produces an enzyme (myrosinase ; or β-sulfoglucoside glucohydrolase) which catalyses the hydrolysis of glucosinolates, thus synthesising biologically active products.()
