Auxiliary Observation Methods

From Triple Performance

To monitor the number of insects in the plot, here are some observation techniques.

For flying insects:

Direct observation on the plant or visual inspection: On 25 to 100 leaves, flowers, fruits, plants or twigs per observation area (small plots or representative parts)

Colored / attractive / sticky traps: Yellow, blue, white or red depending on the insects to be captured, in bowls, plates, pheromones, bait with 1 to 5 traps per observation area

Beating or shaking twigs: Using a bat, shake 25 to 100 twigs per observation area, place a tray or a mounted cloth to collect the insects.

Malaise tent and cone trap: 1 to 5 single or bidirectional traps per farm

Sweep net: Perform 10 to 25 sweeps per observation area

Thermal aspirator: 25 to 100 suction samples of 5 to 15 seconds per observation area

For soil insects:

Pitfall trap or Barber pot: 3 to 7 pots per observation area containing an attractive liquid

Emergence trap: 2 to 3 traps per observation area

Invertebrate boards: visual inspection on 2 to 3 wooden boards per observation area
