Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. is a species of plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family. It is often regarded as a " weed " growing along roadsides. This small annual plant, native to Europe, Asia and north-west Africa, has a rapid life cycle (six weeks from seed to seed), is hardy and can self-pollinate. A. thaliana has a relatively small genome of around 135 megabase pairs (Mbp). These qualities have made it a reference model organism for both biological and genetic research since 1998.()
