Anti-frost candles allow to warm the air at night during short and occasional frost periods. This provides a thermal gain of 2.5°C, for 500 candles per hectare with a usage duration of 11h per candle. To be effective, the number of candles may vary depending on the expected temperatures. The agro-equipment seller Chauvin advises placing between 250 and 300 candles/ha to counter a night between 0° and -3°C and between 500 and 550 candles/ha to counter temperatures between -3° and -6°C.[1] The cost of this method is €2,500/ha for 2 nights of treatment.

Advantages Disadvantages
  • effective on light frosts
  • less polluting than fuel
  • suitable for small areas
  • not effective on severe frosts
  • delicate ignition
  • irregular combustion
  • quite heavy handling
  • night watch required
