Agriculture is also increasingly involved in electricity generation through agrivoltaics, which will account for 13% of the renewable energy produced by French agriculture by 2020.

Photovoltaics is a technology for generating electricity from solar radiation : an infinite resource. The sun's rays are captured by a power station or "panels", whose semi-conductor crystals (usually silicon) generate a direct current.

The electricity produced in this way can be consumed locally or sold to a supplier.

In agriculture, photovoltaic production is usually reserved for non-productive surfaces that receive good sunlight, such as the roofs of buildings. However, it can sometimes be achieved by making a compromise with cultivated areas , as in the case of photovoltaic farms in the field.

The term "agrivoltaics" generally refers to the production of electricity byinstalling solar panels on the ground (as opposed to panels on the roofs of buildings, which refer to conventional photovoltaics).
