These  films are where I try and balance my deep   despair at the declining state of our woodlands  with, I hope, a healthy dose of optimism that   trees, and land use more widely, have risen to  the top of the political agenda. In our last film   we identified the fact that 40% of the trees  in this country are based in small woodlands,   and how important it is to recognise and  understand the issues facing owners of these woodlands. For this episode we are going to widen  our focus, and explore options for land that is   not currently forested. We're going to have a look  at agriculture, and how farms can contribute to   increasing and improving woodland cover in the UK.  Currently, agriculture makes up about 70 percent   of the land use in the uk and only about 5% of  this is woodland cover   if we are going to meet government targets then a lot of  this is going to have to happen on agricultural land Currently in the UK agriculture - the  growing of food - and forestry - the growing   and harvesting of trees - are treated as separate  disciplines, now this may be partly cultural but   I do believe that this siloed approach has been  reinforced by the common agricultural policy,   which has for years disincentivized the planting  of trees on productive agricultural land.   However there is a way to farm that involves  food production and increased tree cover and   that is agroforestry. This concept promises  many environmental and ecological benefits.    Now agriculture is definitely not my area of expertise  so i've come to meet two people who have literary,   academic and practical experience of agroforestry. Chris Smaje author of Small Farm Future, and his   wife Cordelia Rowlatt moved into farming in 2003.  I've come to their farm near Frome in Somerset   to find out why they got into farming,  and how trees have helped transform their   land. Why do you think that trees are important  in the agricultural landscape? Well they've got so   many different functions some of them are fairly  obvious ones - obviously they have uses as timber   or livestock fodder trees - they they  do all sorts of things with water management and   protection from flooding and we've got a  little bit away from that um but in recent times   but historically people always integrated trees  with farming - traditional land use was wood pasture   where people would graze animals underneath trees  and make use of the the products from the trees as   well I think that's going to be a bigger feature  of farming again in the future. Tell us the history of your involvement at Vallis and and how  you became interested in farming. I guess it all originated from the idea of rethinking and  relocalising the food system and sort of bringing   people and and food and local farming together  - in ways that the the mainstream food   system doesn't do so much. My wife Cordelia and I  when we were living in London - this was in the   in the 90s and people were talking about climate  change and food and the global food system being   problematic and so on. We wanted to be  near a town and part of a community,   and we ended up buying this piece of land The  first thing we did actually was plant these trees   these trees were all planted over kind of the  winters of 2004 and 2005. but then we started a   market garden and a veg box scheme and that's been  the the sort of main agricultural focus here but   various other community and education projects  and kind of small holding activities here this   is Shared Earth Learning the poly tunnel  over there - and also some of the land here   and they are an educational cooperative, who  provide opportunities for kids who benefit from   being outside. It's fantastic to share land with  groups like that and also they get to use the woodland What does agroforestry mean to you and  how has it influenced the way you farm your land? I suppose really it just means sort of what it  says on the tin it's agriculture and forestry   and it's bringing those two things together - we haven't necessarily thought of this as a   explicitly as an agroforestry project, it's more  been a a way you know a case of thinking about   what sorts of land use, you know,  we we want to have and been to be honest it's been a little bit seat  of the pants um you know. We we have sat down and planned things but it's, you know, in some  ways it's been a sort of reactive process   One of the things we were trying to think about  when we're planting trees is how we can use the   space really effectively and so we have a campsite  where each pitch is a little bit separate so and   people really love it because they're not squeezed  together in a field I mean one thing on this site   is that it's quite wind exposed we've got these  brutal south westerlies ripping down from the Mendips   so if you look at the way we've planted  trees you'll see our paranoia about the the south westerly winds  You can see this one this  is a sweet chestnut it's it's quite old and it's   tiny because it's getting blasted by the wind but  if we walk deeper this way the ones at the front   are providing wind shelter for the ones behind  and they're way bigger back here This one actually is a cherry not a sweet chestnut but  even the oaks back here are way bigger. Pretty much   the first trees we planted here we interplanted  hazel with alder and so the idea was that the   hazel with a sort of bushy lower growth habit  would mix well with the taller growth habit of   the alder and provide wind protection from top to  bottom. This is the main bit of the market garden   the intensive bit where in the summer there's  things that need picking you know kind of pretty   almost every day and then of course they've got  both of those trees they've got other functions   the the the hazel hopefully gives you some nuts  and the alder is a nitrogen fixing plant   we've got hazel's or even  oak you know we don't necessarily    use it for our daily meals, but you know,  a lot of it is about   sort of multiplying functions and having a  multi-functional site, we planted somewhere   between three and four thousand trees initially and one of the things we were really keen to   be getting some crops from some of them  so chestnuts was a really prime one and I   love the idea of having chestnuts because you're  getting a carbohydrate crop. It creates different   spaces and creates some privacy in the site... and  we also were trying to create different spaces   that would add different layers for biodiversity  but also different kind of human size spaces for   things to happen and as we walk around our land  it's quite interesting to see the effect that   has because as an as a human walking through  our landscape it feels really different to   the the kind of traditionally big agriculture  scale of things and that field is actually   a similar size for us and then as you walk  all over us it's like you can get lost then   we're using the timber um you know we heat our  houses and hot water with it we don't have any   livestock at the moment for various reasons  but we have like right where we're sitting here   we've had like sheep grazing around in here and  obviously there's um you know trees can provide   fodder for for livestock and certainly in some  of the hot summers we've had a couple of years   back that was quite significant actually. Those  trees are specifically ones where you can feed   the leaves to the animals and when it was really  really dry and the sheep were in there my husband   would go in and hack some of the branches off and  drop them down for the sheep to eat so there's   a whole bunch of different things and some of  them are sort of more intensive like we do have   a little nut and fruit orchard you lavish lots of  care and attention on those trees whereas some of   the other ones you know you sort of pretty  much plant them and let them do their thing   we've got some willow down at the bottom which is  fast growing i mean we use it mostly for firewood   and it helps take take up some of the  water in a sort of wet part of the site   considering that over 70 percent of the land in  the uk is under agriculture do you think that   an agroforestry approach could help to meet  government tree planting targets? yeah I think what's attractive about that  is that it's people thinking about trees putting trees to work in the landscape  and combining it with agriculture - I think   planting more trees is great, but people can  you know you can get into this slightly sort of   haphazard tree planting and you know there's  a whole debate about climate change you know   should we really be planting trees to mitigate  climate or shouldn't we be looking more at fossil fuel use? I think if you look at tree planting  from an agroforestry lens it's sort of like the   pieces of the jigsaw come together and it totally  makes sense to plant trees you know as part of a   wider land management that's you know I think the  result would that there would be more trees in the   landscape and and they'd be delivering those  multiple benefits. Why now? What's changing that   makes now the time for an agroforestry revolution? Well I mean obviously there's bigger things going on in the political landscape like  Brexit so we're rethinking the whole   policy framework of farming, climate change is  rising up the agenda and I think there's   the whole rewilding movement, and people getting  more interested in thinking about wildlife and   interacting with with with wildlife in their  local spaces so it's a great time to be um   thinking about this and integrating trees. I mean  my concern i guess is we've got to keep thinking   about food as well. It's not it's not just  trees and it's not just wildlife, or or climate change   It's it's about producing food for  ourselves locally and that's where agroforestry   again contributes because there's the agro bit  as well as the forestry. Are you enthused by the   idea of the the the incoming ELMS policy and the  shift in focus to the provision of public good   I mean i'm enthused by it relative to the last  subsidy which was paying people for owning land, essentially   So yeah, I mean public money for public  goods makes sense my worry is that it's going   to push people into doing good  things in terms of trees in the landscape and   and biodiversity stuff but we need to  be thinking about local food production   and you know putting all these different parts of  the economy together so that good well-produced   local food is available and affordable for  everybody so um you know the the elm stuff is   maybe one part of that that's pushing in the  right direction. What are your hopes and fears   for the future of agroforestry and uk farming more  widely? Well i suppose a fear is obviously it's a   time of huge change and um the farm workforce is  quite an aging one I think a lot of people will be   perhaps thinking about getting out of farming,  and the danger there is that food   production will diminish and the government  will perhaps be thinking more in terms of   trade deals and importing food from other  countries and really what we need to be doing   is relocalizing food and and producing more of  it ourselves, integrating it better   in the landscape but our hope is that the policy framework is more geared to   thoughtful integration of trees and biodiversity  into the landscape there's a lot of young people   who are more switched on than perhaps even a few  years ago. If you could suggest one policy that   the government could implement to support the  work you're doing here what would that be? I'd probably say a carbon tax, because so much, or so many of the problems that we have   are connected with cheap fossil energy that makes  it easy to to sort of divide land uses up into   kind of single monocultural sorts of things. I mean there's loads of other reasons why carbon tax   would make sense but it would really incentivize  people to be producing food and other products   such as woodland products locally in the landscape  in a way that's not really happening at the moment   when fossil energy is so cheap. Well Cordelia it's  been uh fascinating to to find out more about your   land and how you've used the trees and  intersperse the trees with your other types of   agriculture. It would be remiss of me not to introduce the book this is Chris's book   Small Farm Future and I would recommend that all  of our viewers run out and buy a copy it's got some real insights into  small-scale farming and agroforestry   It's been fascinating to get a personal  perspective from Chris and Cordelia and   to understand the journey they've been on. Trees  have completely transformed this landscape you  wouldn't believe that less than 20 years ago  this whole area was just bare arable fields   Vallis is evidence, I think, that trees can play  a part in agriculture so one question is whether   agroforestry can contribute in a meaningful way to  government targets for tree planting, well I would say it has to, because if agricultural land takes  up 70 percent of our of our UK land area we simply   won't have enough space if we don't plant trees  on farmland. 			\| transcription = Good pollination with efficient pollinators is a prerequisite for regular and high-quality yields in agricultural crops, especially in fruit growing. However: The pollination performance of the honey bee is often insufficient in early flowering fruit species and cool weather. Bumblebees and mason bees, on the other hand, also pollinate at lower temperatures. In intensively managed orchards, however, these natural pollinators are often too few in number because they lack sufficient food and habitat. In particular, they are denied access to orchards by weather protection systems. In this video we introduce the most important mason bees for fruit growing and show how their cocoons are correctly distributed. Mason bees for successful pollination in closed cherry orchards Mason bee species for fruit growing Two mason bee species are particularly important for the pollination of fruit crops: the horned mason bee and the rust-red mason bee. The horned mason bee flies at temperatures as low as 4 degrees Celsius and is particularly suitable for pollinating early flowering fruit species such as stone fruit. They are deployed about 3 days before flowering. The rust-red mason bee hatches a little later and covers a longer flowering period. They are suitable for later flowering fruit species such as apple, pear and berries. To be deployed about 10 days before flowering. Honeybees fly within a radius of 5 kilometres around their nests. The two species of mason bees, on the other hand, only search for flowers within 50-200 metres. This makes them much more efficient pollinators compared to honeybees. Spawning the cocoons The overwintered cocoons are placed in a box where air holes have been previously pierced. So that the bottom cocoons also hatch well, they may be filled in a maximum of three layers. These boxes are placed in the nesting boxes. These protect the nesting blocks. Requirements for the nesting boxes Nesting boxes need a roof that protects them from rain. Mesh wire is attached in the front to protect against birds getting in. The box must be placed at least 1 m above the ground and must be protected from pesticides. The nesting boxes should be oriented towards the south or south-east and should be placed at right angles to the rows of trees, so that the mason bees can fly directly to the trees. There should be no additional nesting facilities for mason bees near the nesting box, as this may cause problems with parasites. For good pollination of dwarf fruit trees, about 2000 cocoons per hectare are needed. More information can be found in the FiBL technical guide.

Spring 2021 was wet due to heavy and persistent rainfall during the months of March to June. Therefore, a demonstration was held on an organic farm with many weeds under the trees. To see if machines work properly, they have to be tested under these conditions. The demo was held on the organic fruit farm of Jacco Merkens in Utrecht. The trigger for holding this demonstration was the weed situation, but also because the stocker machines are introduced on the market in the Netherlands. The machines consist of a basic frame to which a hoeing machine, a wire mower, a roller chopper, with or without a finger weeder, can be connected. The frame can be mounted in the front, the lift or the side of the tractor and can be single or double sided. The first machine is the Aedes hydraulic inter-row weeder with wire rotor. Jacco’s own machine. He uses this machine in addition to his other weeding machines. The wires cut the weeds under the trees and is used in situations of long weeds and before using the inter-row cultivating and hoeing machines that work in the soil. The working speed 6-10 km/h. The second machine is the Vimas interrow wire machine from the company Hissink. This machine also cut the weeds and doesn’t go into the soil. One set of threads lasts for 6 to 10 hectares depending on soil and speed durability. The set of threads can be adjusted mechanically in just a few steps. The working speed is 3-6 km/h. The third machine is the Ladurner cultivator from the company Hissink. The Ladurner cultivator has two rotors with blades with an adjustable working depth. Sensor bars ensure that the machine works around the trees. Most organic fruit growers in the Netherlands use a Ladurner. The machine can be used under many different conditions on different soils. Soils should not be too wet or too dry. The working speed is 2,5-3,5 km/h. The forth machine is the Stocker wire machine from the company ‘Van der Linden Fruitteelt Machines’. Build on the Stocker basic frame. The rotary mower is hydraulically driven and has 8 wires. It is used in periods when cultivators and hoeing machines cannot be not used, or to cut high weeds before using the hoeing machine. The fifth machine is the Stocker hoeing machine from the company ‘Van der Linden Fruitteelt Machines’. The machine can be connected on the Stocker basic frame. The cultivator has two hoe heads, one of them is controlled by a sensor. With an hydraulic system the height, width, depth and angle of the hoeing heads can be adjusted. The working speed is 2,5 to 4 km/h. The principle of operation is the same as the Ladurner cultivator. The last machine is the Stocker roller chopper with a finger weeder from the company ‘Van der Linden Fruitteelt Machines’. The working speed can go up to 12 km/h. The amount of iron discs can vary from 2 to 4 discs. The machine does not swing in and out along the trunk and does not have a sensor. To work around the tree a finger weeder is added. And so we need to have plants whose roots are capable of colonizing and exploiting the resources of the environment. At the INRAE estate in Toulouse, we have a phenomobile enabling observations of certain aerial plants features correlated with manual root systems observations. And that allows us to move much faster on screening and evaluating varieties more suited to this specific cropping system. This webinar showcased novel research into nature-based solutions conducted by students of the NBSOIL Academy and explored how these solutions can be deployed to tackle soil health challenges.

NBSOIL is a Soil Mission Horizon project that trains new advisers in deploying six rigorously tested nature-based methods; paludiculture, blue-green infrastructure, cover crops, organic fertiliser, bioremediation, and forest diversification to address critical soil threats. Through an innovative blended learning programme, NBSOIL has been training a new generation of soil advisers and providing tools and resources to put nature-based solutions (NBS) into action for sustainable soil management.

The NBSOIL Academy’s Final Projects provided a unique opportunity for students to put their skills to the test and develop tangible advisory plans for implementing nature-based solutions in specific contexts. These projects enabled existing and aspiring soil advisers to apply their knowledge, receive expert mentorship, and build valuable professional networks.

*What happened:*

During this online event, participants heard from leaders of the NBSOIL Academy and attended four student final project presentations from Italy, Estonia, Sweden, and France.

NBSOIL partners IUNG and IUCN emphasised that this module provides a gateway to enhancing soil advisory services by offering innovative business models and a more profound grasp of EU soil policy. This latest NBSOIL Academy module will teach you how to develop business models for soil advisory services, identify public and private funding opportunities, and navigate the EU’s policy landscape, including the Common Agricultural Policy, the Nature Restoration Law and the Green Deal.

During the session, the speakers also introduced the NBSOIL Moodle-based learning platform, which is designed to empower soil advisors with practical tools and insights.

NBSOIL celebrated the exciting launch of the NBSOIL Academy on 5 June at 10:00 CEST with a webinar reaching over 100 attendees across Europe!

NBSOIL offers a free, comprehensive training academy for current and aspiring soil advisors across Europe under the EU Soil Mission’s programme.

The launch celebration started with a webinar for those around the world who want to dive deep into sustainable land management. Moderators warmly welcomed the guests and learned more about the EU Mission Soil and one of its sister projects, PREP Soil, who are driving engagement and ‘preparing the ground’ for soil health across Europe.

Project partner, the Soil Association, led the session by providing information on the logistics and content of the Soil Academy. The other panelists then addressed questions about the academy, its content and the registration process.

The course content will be structured into four modules, alongside a final project. They will include online sessions, live webinars, practical workshops and registration events. Vincent Levavasseur with CNA and Almudena Olivas del Rey with ITAP introduced these modules, announcing that they will be released gradually from June 2024 to May 2025.

The final project will address a real soil advisory situation, designed in teams and mentored by the NBSOIL experts. This will span the last nine months of the Academy, from October 2025 until June 2026.

With eight speakers at this event, attendees heard from all aspects of the academy; some presenting more in-depth academic content of this educational tool. Representative of the Soil Mission, Marialuisa Dal Poz, DG Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission introduced the EU mission. Pablo Gómez, speaker on the PREP Soil Project, (INIA) followed with their connections to the project.

The NBSOIL Academy Module 3 launch webinar provided an engaging and interactive introduction to the use of digital tools for monitoring and mapping soil health. Participants from across Europe joined the session to explore how these technologies are integrated into the Academy's training programme, aimed at training a new generation of soil advisors.

The session focused on presenting the Module 3-Digital tools for soil health monitoring and mapping of the NBSOIL Academy, which provides basic and advanced knowledge on digital technologies such as satellites, drones, real-time soil sensors and GIS tools. Structured in three progressive levels, the module is available in seven languages and hosted on Moodle, a user-friendly online platform. The platform includes theoretical content, interactive exercises, case studies, glossaries and self-assessment quizzes.
